105. One in five doctors plan to leave medicine in the next two years

Here’s a scary forecast for healthcare in this country. A new survey of more than 20,000 respondents at 124 institutions across the country, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, found that one in every five physicians in this country plans to leave his or her current practice in the next two years. Even worse, one of every three physicians, PAs, nurse practitioners and nurses plan to reduce their work hours in the next 12 months. Burnout, overwhelming workload, fear of COVID infection, anxiety and depression were all given as reasons for leaving or cutting back from medicine. If those numbers turn out to be even close to accurate, it could be a disaster for healthcare and patients in this country.
Through the stories of a dozen athletes whose injuries and recovery advanced the field (including Joan Benoit, Michael Jordan, Brandi Chastain, and Tommy John), Dr. Geier explains how sports medicine makes sports safer for the pros, amateurs, student-athletes, and weekend warriors alike.
