84. Tips to help you achieve your New Year’s resolution
Dr. David Geier is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist in Charleston, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina. He helps athletes and active people feel and perform their best, regardless of age, injuries and medical history. He has been featured in major media publications and shows over 2,500 times throughout his career.
A new Medifast survey reveals that less than half of Americans plan on setting a New Year’s resolution this year. Since only about 1 in 10 people stick with their resolutions, I thought I would share tips for success for those of us setting health-related resolutions. Pick one goal instead of a list of goals. Instead of setting a broad goal, like “lose weight” or “get in shape,” make your goal specific, like “exercise 5 days a week.” Plan ahead of time what steps you will take to achieve your goal and how you will stay on track. And make sure you start with tiny steps to achieve your goal instead of taking on too much, too soon and not being able to sustain your efforts.
Through the stories of a dozen athletes whose injuries and recovery advanced the field (including Joan Benoit, Michael Jordan, Brandi Chastain, and Tommy John), Dr. Geier explains how sports medicine makes sports safer for the pros, amateurs, student-athletes, and weekend warriors alike.
