With gyms more crowded due to people trying to achieve New Years resolutions, questions about whether we should be wearing masks have returned. While they are not required while exercising in South Carolina, many believe they should be enforced to limit spread of the virus. Surprisingly, the World Health Organization says on its website that people should NOT wear masks when exercising. They believe masks may reduce the ability to breathe comfortably. Plus, they note that sweat can make the mask become wet, promoting the growth of microorganisms. Regardless, the most important preventive measure you can take during exercise in the gym is to stay 3 to 6 feet from others.
