With Memorial Day marking the informal start to summer, kids will soon head to summer camps. On Friday, the CDC relaxed its recommendations regarding camps. Camps where all staff and campers are vaccinated can return to full capacity and end many COVID restrictions, including masks. Since the risk of virus spread is so low outdoors, unvaccinated children can be outdoors without masks unless the area is crowded and involves sustained close contact. The FDA authorized the use of the Pfizer vaccine in children aged 12 to 15 earlier this month, and the CDC notes that 2.5 million children have received their first dose in the last 18 days. Younger children will likely be able to receive the vaccine in the fall. If your middle- or high-school-aged children are headed to summer camp, consider getting them vaccinated as soon as possible.
