Researchers at the University of Utah believe that in the coming years, the coronavirus causing COVID-19 will cause nothing worse than the common cold. Their research, published in the journal Viruses, uses mathematical models incorporating evidence on the body’s immune response to the virus. Their models show that as more adults become partially immune, whether through prior infection or vaccination, severe infections all but disappear over the next decade. If so, it would be similar to other seasonal, less dangerous coronaviruses circulating all the time. Still, it’s possible this virus could cause severe disease and deaths, especially if new variants of the virus overcome people’s immunity. So far at least, that doesn’t seem to be happening.
The coronavirus could only cause cold-like illness in the coming years
