While we have been concerned about COVID-19 infection from all kinds of public settings – work, school, gyms, airports, and more – the data we have points to small indoor gatherings and households as the source of the fastest spread of the coronavirus. When people get together with friends and family in small groups, they are less likely to wear masks and more likely to stay together indoors for long periods of time. These factors increase the ease of spread of the virus. Likewise, when researchers at the University of Mississippi studied COVID-19 cases in children and adolescents, it was these small social gatherings that was most often associated, not school.
