Over the last century, life expectancy has increased in this country. But a new study out of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the coronavirus will reverse that trend. Danish researchers used Census Bureau data and projected COVID-19 deaths and found that life expectancy in the United States will decrease by 1.13 years, lower than any year since 2003. The pandemic will affect life expectancy the most for Black and Latino populations, who have higher mortality rates from the virus. The life expectancy of these populations might drop as much as two to three years.
COVID-19 expected to reduce life expectancy by over one year
