COVID-19 has cost more than 20 million years of life worldwide, according to a new study. Researchers from Spain and Germany analyzed data from more than 1.2 million people in 81 countries who have died of COVID-19 so far. They examined the difference between a person’s age at the time of death and their life expectancy, based on data on life expectancy in these countries. More than 20.5 million years of life were lost due to COVID-19 in these countries alone. Nearly half of the years of life were lost by people 55 to 75 years old. And the years of life lost were 44 percent greater among men than women.
