We’ve all heard how uncomfortable the current COVID-19 tests are. A study out of the University of Washington, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, shows that home self-collected swabs are comparable to those current upper nasal swabs collected by healthcare providers. Allowing people to take their own samples from the middle of the nose could increase testing, especially for people early in the illness, and help speed self-isolation and contract tracing. It could also decrease the risk to health care workers and depletion of hospital personal protective equipment.
