Sports medicine stats: Achilles tendon ruptures

75% of all acute Achilles tendon ruptures occur in recreational sports, most commonly 30-40-year-old males.  Only 8-20% of AT ruptures occur in competitive athletes. They occur more often on the left side. More than half account while pushing off a foot while extending the knee or in jumping sports.
