Sports medicine stats: Surgery for patellar dislocations

A patellar dislocation is one of the most common acute knee disorders in children and adolescents. The incidence of dislocations among pediatric patients is estimated at 43 per 100,000, with a peak incidence for patients of all ages occurring at age 15 years.

A recent study looking at reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament for patellar dislocations found good results. Following surgery, 84.1% of patients returned to sports and only 1.2% of patients experienced recurrent instability.
