Sports medicine stats: Wrist pain in gymnasts

Wrist injuries affect 46% to 80% of all gymnasts. It is the most commonly injured upper extremity site among female gymnasts, and the second most commonly injured upper extremity among male gymnasts.

Among competitive gymnastics, 15% to 20% of gradual-onset injuries affect the wrist. A survey of collegiate gymnasts found 79% had wrist pain, and 66% had symptoms for four months or longer. Among these athletes, 37% trained through wrist pain without limitation and 13% sought medical treatment. However, because a large proportion of gymnasts with wrist pain continue to train and defer medical evaluation, the prevalence of wrist injury is underreported.
