All-terrain vehicles (ATV) remain a significant public health and safety concern. Annually, there are over 800 ATV-related deaths, and more than 130,000 emergency department visits across the US. Since 2001, children under 16 years of age have accounted for nearly one-third of all ATV-related injuries and one-fourth of all fatalities.
The economic cost of morbidity and mortality from ATV crashes is high, with an estimated lifetime economic cost of pediatric deaths, in 2004 alone, accounting for more than one billion US dollars.
