A certain type of ultraviolet light appears to kill the coronavirus. In a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control, researchers used ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 222 nanometers. After only 30 seconds, this far-UVC light killed 99.7% of the viral culture. Because it doesn’t penetrate the outer layer of the eye and skin, this wavelength is thought to be far safer to humans than standard ultraviolet light. If it proves to be safe and effective, far UVC could soon be used in public places to eliminate COVID-19.
