Trochanteric bursitis is a common cause of hip pain in athletes and non-athletes alike. It is a bursitis that manifests as pain on the lateral side, or outside, of the hip.
Signs and symptoms
Trochanteric bursitis causes pain at the bony prominence on the outside of the hip, where the iliotibial band (IT band) runs over the greater trochanter.
Treatment of trochanteric bursitis
Treatment of trochanteric bursitis is almost always nonsurgical. Physical therapists treat trochanteric bursitis with manual therapy to the pelvis and leg, specific strengthening exercises, movement retraining, and gait evaluation to determine causes during running. Adjusting athletic activities to limit the amount of pain in this area can also be helpful. Occasionally, injection of a corticosteroid (cortisone shot) into the trochanteric bursa can be helpful.
