COVID-19 has taken a toll on the mental health of our physicians and healthcare workers. In a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers collected data on close to 100,000 health care workers across the world. They found that more than 1 in 5 healthcare professionals experienced depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder during the pandemic. To put those numbers in perspective, less than five percent of the world’s population experience these conditions normally, although they are likely higher for everyone during the pandemic. But the study found many healthcare providers fearing for their own health, working harder than ever, and having less psychological support. The fact that the virus has negatively impacted the mental health of healthcare workers comes at a time when we need them more than ever.
