There has been a significant drop in cancer screenings since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparing health insurance claims from February to April, mammograms decreased 87%. Pap smears dropped 83%. Colonoscopies decreased 90%. But it’s not just the screenings. Cancer diagnoses have dropped too. A study in JAMA found an almost 50 percent drop in diagnoses of six common types of cancer in the early weeks of the pandemic. And the lower number of people diagnosed doesn’t mean that those cancers are becoming less common. We just aren’t detecting them because many people aren’t getting screened.
