A new saliva test appears to detect COVID-19 as well as the nasal swabs do, according to data published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Yale researchers confirmed their accuracy on hospitalized patients who had already tested positive with nasal swabs. This saliva test can be self-collected by patients using easy-to-obtain supplies, like sterile urine cups. The FDA recently gave an emergency use authorization for this test, the fifth such saliva test approved. Hopefully, we will have COVID-19 saliva tests available in the area in the coming days and weeks.
