Researchers at the COVID-19 Prevention Network are starting a study of college students to determine the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, not only in terms of preventing illness, but stopping spread of the virus. They plan to enroll 12,000 students who will perform daily nose swabs for four months. Half will get the Moderna vaccine right away, and half will get it after the study ends. The researchers will also monitor 25,000 close contacts of the students in the study. If we can prove that the vaccine not only prevents most people from getting COVID-19 but also that it prevents transmission of the virus, we could return to pre-pandemic life.
