Last fall, we worried that our healthcare system could be in trouble if we saw a surge in both COVID-19 cases and cases of the flu. Well, it doesn’t appear that ever happened. Influenza cases have dropped significantly compared to recent years. Last week, the CDC said one-fifth of one percent of all influenza tests conducted nationwide this season proved positive. Here in South Carolina, there have been 122 flu-related hospitalizations this year, compared to over 2600 at this point last year. For all the harms the coronavirus has caused, the mask-wearing, hand washing, and social distancing have all kept the flu at bay.
