A lumbar herniated disc, or a herniated disc in your lower back, is a condition in which the material within one of the discs in the lumbar spine (the nucleus pulposis) partially extrudes out of the outer layer of the disc (the annulus fibrosis).
Signs and symptoms
This extrusion of disc material can place pressure on nearby nerve roots. The athlete might experience back pain from the tear in the annulus of the disc. The athlete might have pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness into the leg, foot, or toes from pressure on the nerve root.
Treatment options for a lumbar herniated disc
Nonsurgical treatments can include anti-inflammatory medications, steroid dose packs, physical therapy, and epidural steroid injections. Surgery to remove the disc and relieve pressure on the nerve can sometimes be necessary if nonoperative treatments fail or neurologic deficits worsen.
