Whether it was schools switching to online classes or companies requiring people work from home, Americans have been sitting more than ever. And a recent study in the journal Psychiatry Research shows how sitting affects us mentally. Researchers studied over 900 Brazilian adults during the first few months of the pandemic. One-third of these adults sat more than 10 hours per day. And these were the adults more likely to report symptoms of depression. Too much sitting has also been linked to anxiety and memory difficulties later in life. Even if you exercise every day, you can still be too sedentary. So anything you can do to avoid sitting for long periods will help with your mood, stress, thinking clearly and your overall mental health.
