The 5-year period of 2005-2009 saw more EHS deaths in organized sports in the United States (US) than any other 5-year period in the past 35 years. Among organized sports in the US, the frequency of EHS-related deaths is highest in football, with a large proportion occurring during practice. During 1995-2010, 46 football players died from EHS (35 high school, 8 college, 2 professional, and 1 sandlot), which is an average of 3 annually.
