Sports medicine stats: The physical demands of swimming
Dr. David Geier is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist in Charleston, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina. The collegiate-level swimmer swims between 40,000 to 50,000 yards per week of training. Elite swimmers can swim up to 20,000 yards per day. With 5 to 7 practices per week, often twice a day, this distance roughly equates to about 18,000 shoulder revolutions per week.
