In a press release from the company last week, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine can be stored in a regular freezer and not the ultra-cold freezers initially thought to be required. The FDA still has to weigh the evidence before allowing the vaccine to be stored in this way. But it would be a major step forward in the delivery of the vaccine in this country. Right now, if people scheduled to get the vaccine cancel or there are more doses available on a given day than the number of people who show up, many vaccine doses are wasted or given haphazardly to anyone who shows up. Being able to store vaccine doses in normal freezers could prevent doses from going to waste and ensure more Americans get the vaccine.
