We’ve seen how the coronavirus has disrupted the restaurant and movie theater businesses, but COVID-19 has also had a profound impact on the fitness industry. When gyms reopened across most of the country, 60 percent of members didn’t return to gyms, and another 20 percent had stopped exercising altogether. Another study of gym members found that 54 percent either froze or cancelled their memberships. The good news is that virtual workouts have stepped up to fill the void. Since the start of the pandemic, 80 percent of fitness consumers live-streamed workouts, compared to only 7 percent the year before. Now three of every four fitness clubs and gyms offer some version of on-demand and livestream group workouts.
